Amboseli National Park covers 392 km² at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in southern Kenya near the Tanzania border. The park is renowned for delivering what is arguably Africa’s most iconic safari image: massive elephant bulls striding across the dusty plains with Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit soaring 5,895m behind them.
Amboseli’s elephant population is one of the best-studied in Africa. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project, running continuously since 1972, has documented individual elephants across multiple generations, making this the longest-running elephant study in the world. Visitors routinely encounter the park’s legendary large bulls, some of the biggest-tusked elephants remaining in Africa, in remarkable proximity.
The park’s landscape centres on a dried ancient lakebed, a legacy of the glacial meltwaters that once flowed down from Kilimanjaro. Today, underground springs feed swampy areas in the park’s heart, creating permanent water sources that attract concentrations of wildlife and waterbirds throughout the year. The marsh areas around Enkongo Narok are outstanding for birding, over 600 species have been recorded.
Observation Hill provides a sweeping panoramic view over the park and the wetlands, with Kilimanjaro rising behind on clear mornings (best in January–February and June–October).
Amboseli lies within traditional Maasai land and the surrounding communities play a key role in conservation through community conservancies. Cultural visits to Maasai bomas offer guests an authentic insight into the semi-nomadic pastoral life.
