Kidepo Valley National Park sits in Uganda’s far northeast, in the Karamoja region where the country meets Kenya and South Sudan. Established as a game reserve in 1958 and upgraded to national park status in 1962, it protects about 1,442 km² of semi-arid savannah, escarpments, and seasonal river valleys.
Its remoteness has kept visitor numbers low. Game drives often unfold with few other vehicles in sight, which is rare luxury in East African safari travel.
Wildlife and landscapes
Kidepo protects more than 75 mammal species, including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hyena, eland, greater kudu, and oribi. It is also one of the few Uganda parks where cheetah are regularly possible. More than 475 bird species have been recorded, including ostrich and the endemic Karamoja apalis.
The Narus Valley holds reliable dry-season water and concentrates wildlife against a backdrop of mountains and open plain. The neighbouring Kidepo Valley adds further wild country when conditions allow.
What to experience
Game drives
Early morning and late afternoon 4x4 drives are the main stage: predators on the move, elephant at waterholes, and wide golden savannah under the Morungole massif.
Nature walks
Guided walks with rangers bring flora into focus, from sausage trees to the Kidepo lily, plus warthog, antelope, and birdlife at walking pace.
Karamojong and IK cultural visits
Nearby manyattas open a window onto pastoralist life: cattle culture, dance, crafts, and ceremonies that still shape this highland frontier. Visits are arranged respectfully and support community livelihoods.
Best time to visit
June to August and December to March favour game viewing as animals gather around lasting water. The park remains compelling in greener months for those who accept softer tracks and dramatic skies.
Kidepo vs Murchison Falls
Choose Kidepo for remote savannah, cheetah possibility, and almost empty game drives. Choose Murchison Falls National Park for Nile boat safaris, the Top of the Falls, and easier access from Kampala. Guests with time often fly into Kidepo after a Murchison stay rather than driving both ways.
Getting there
By road, expect roughly 9 to 12 hours from Kampala via northern Uganda. By air, scheduled or charter flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi reach Kidepo airstrip in under two hours.
