Mount Elgon National Park straddles the Uganda-Kenya border in Uganda’s eastern highlands, protecting about 1,279 km² of an ancient extinct volcano. Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) is Uganda’s second-highest point. Elgon’s base covers a greater area than Kilimanjaro’s, and its summit caldera is among the world’s largest intact volcanic calderas.
Vegetation shifts with altitude: montane forest, bamboo, heather moorland, then alpine zones of giant lobelia and groundsel. Wildlife is present though less concentrated than in savannah parks: forest elephant, buffalo, hyena, bushbuck, duiker, colobus and blue monkeys, and more than 300 bird species including the Lammergeier.

Trekking and hiking
Popular routes include:
- Sasa Trail: the most direct, typically 4 to 5 days to the summit
- Piswa Trail: longer and more gradual, with wide views
- Sipi Trail: suited to shorter hikes linked to the Sipi Falls area
Along the way: waterfalls, caves, hot springs, and the open caldera. Acclimatise carefully; altitude matters even for fit walkers.
Sipi Falls
Just outside the park near Sipi town, three cascade tiers cut the mountain’s lower slopes. Day hikes, viewpoints, photography, and abseiling make Sipi a natural base for shorter Elgon stays.
Caves
- Kitum Cave: salt-rich walls where elephants dig minerals with their tusks
- Chepnyalil Cave: near the Sasa Trail, historically a Sabiny shrine and refuge
Coffee and culture
Volcanic soils produce fine Arabica. Coffee tours follow cultivation through roasting with local farmers. The Bagisu and Sabiny foothill communities are known for farming traditions and the Bagisu Imbalu rite of passage, held in even-numbered years.
Best time to visit
Dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the most stable trekking conditions. Mist and rain remain possible year-round on a large mountain massif.
Sipi Falls and Kitum Cave
Day hikes to Sipi Falls and visits to Kitum Cave (where elephants mine salt from the rock) are the strongest short-stay reasons to add Mount Elgon. Full Wagagai summit treks suit travellers who want highland hiking instead of, or after, the western gorilla circuit through Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Getting there
Mount Elgon sits near Mbale, roughly four to five hours from Kampala by road.
