Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects about 998 km² of the Rwenzori range on the Uganda-DR Congo border, the fabled Mountains of the Moon. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the park is known for glaciers near the equator, alpine vegetation, and serious multi-day trekking.
Margherita Peak (5,109 m) is Uganda’s highest point and Africa’s third-highest summit after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those volcanic peaks, the Rwenzoris are crystalline mountains shaped by ice, with snow lingering on the highest ridges.
Henry Morton Stanley reported the snows in 1888. In 1906 the Duke of the Abruzzi led the first recorded ascent and named Margherita Peak. The area was designated a national park in 1952.
Flora and wildlife
Distinct belts rise with altitude: montane forest, bamboo, heather moorland, then giant lobelia, groundsel, moss, and lichen in the high zone. Wildlife is quieter than in savannah parks but includes chimpanzees, colobus and blue monkeys, and endemic birds such as Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori batis, and handsome francolin.
What to experience
Climbing to Margherita Peak
Full summit treks typically last 7 to 10 days depending on route and pace. Popular options:
- Central Circuit: demanding, with dramatic landscapes and full ecological range
- Kilembe Route: slightly gentler approach from the western slopes
Acclimatisation, waterproof layers, warm clothing, and sturdy boots are essential. Shorter treks of one to six days reach the lower and middle zones without a summit bid.
Nature walks and shorter trails
- Buraro / Mahoma chimpanzee walks: forest primates in the foothills
- Mubuku River Trail: riverine forest for birds and primates
- Mahoma Trail: a one-day hike with views over Nyamwamba Valley
Cultural encounters
Bakonjo and Bamba communities in the foothills share farming traditions and mountain culture that frame the trek beyond the peaks.
Best time to visit
December to February and June to August offer the driest, most stable conditions. Rain and fog can appear even then, so serious waterproofs belong in every pack.
Central Circuit vs Kilembe Route
The Central Circuit is the classic, demanding Margherita approach through the full vegetation sequence. The Kilembe Route starts from the western slopes and is often preferred by guests who want a slightly gentler profile. Shorter Mahoma and Mubuku walks suit travellers combining Rwenzori foothills with Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kibale Forest National Park.
Getting there
Kasese is the main gateway, about 25 km from the park entrance and linked by road from Kampala or by air via Kasese airstrip. Trekking permits are arranged through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. We build Rwenzori days into private Uganda safaris for guests who want mountain wilderness alongside primate or savannah travel. More in the Uganda destination guide.
