Mgahinga Gorilla National Park occupies just 33.7 km² in Uganda’s extreme southwest, yet it sits at one of Africa’s most remarkable junctions: the Virunga Conservation Area shared with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the DRC.
Gazetted as a game sanctuary in 1930 and upgraded to national park status in 1991, Mgahinga protects bamboo forest, montane woodland, swamp, and the slopes of three volcanoes. The Batwa hold deep historical and spiritual ties to these mountains.
Wildlife and habitats
- Mountain gorillas: the habituated Nyakagezi family is available for trekking (gorillas may also cross park boundaries)
- Golden monkeys: Virunga specialists with vivid gold-orange coats, best tracked here among Uganda’s parks
- Birdlife: more than 180 species, including Albertine Rift endemics such as Rwenzori turaco and Kivu ground thrush
- Forest elephant, bushbuck, and smaller mammals move through quieter sectors
What to experience
Gorilla trekking
Treks begin with a ranger briefing, then a hike of roughly two to six hours depending on the family’s location. Guests spend one hour with the gorillas. Permits are limited and should be booked well ahead through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a licensed operator such as Orika.
Golden monkey tracking
Mgahinga is Uganda’s best park for golden monkeys. Guided treks in the bamboo zone are usually less strenuous than gorilla days and pair well with a Virunga itinerary.
Volcano hiking
- Mount Sabyinyo (“Old Man’s Teeth”): panoramic views into Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC
- Mount Gahinga: giant bamboo forest
- Mount Muhabura: the highest of the three, a full-day summit for fit hikers
Batwa Trail and nature walks
The Batwa Trail shares forest skills, storytelling, and dance. Guided bamboo and montane walks add birds, flora, and quieter forest time.
Best time and practical notes
Dry seasons (December to February and June to September) offer firmer trails and clearer views. Wet seasons are greener and quieter, with muddier paths. Altitude runs from about 2,227 m to 4,127 m, so pack warm layers, waterproofs, and sturdy boots. Gorilla and golden monkey permits are required and strictly limited.

Mgahinga is the best place in Uganda for golden monkeys, Virunga specialists found in the bamboo zone. Treks are usually shorter and less strenuous than gorilla days, which makes them an excellent second primate morning after (or before) a gorilla trek.
Mgahinga vs Bwindi for gorilla trekking
Choose Mgahinga for fewer visitors, volcano scenery, and golden monkeys in the same park. Choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for more habituated families, more lodge variety, and the habituation experience. Many travellers do both, then continue to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda on a Virunga circuit.
Getting there
