Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s signature wildlife destination, covering about 160 km² in the northwest. It protects five of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura. The park borders Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the DRC.
Established in 1925, it is Africa’s oldest national park, originally gazetted to protect mountain gorillas. It became internationally known through Dian Fossey, who founded the Karisoke Research Centre in 1967 between Bisoke and Karisimbi. Fossey was killed in 1985 and is buried in the park beside the gorillas she worked to save.
Today Volcanoes remains one of the most accessible mountain gorilla sanctuaries in Africa: park headquarters at Kinigi is typically under two hours from Kigali.
What to experience
Gorilla trekking
The centrepiece of any visit. Groups are limited to eight guests per habituated family, with a minimum age of 15. Visits last one hour. Key rules: keep at least seven metres distance, no flash photography, do not trek if you have a contagious illness, and follow guide instructions at all times.

Golden monkey tracking
Golden monkeys live only in the Virunga bamboo zone. A well-known troop on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo can number more than 100 individuals. Treks are usually less strenuous than gorilla days and suit a wider range of travellers. Permits are arranged via the Rwanda Development Board.
Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke
A guided hike to Fossey’s grave and the former research area is both moving and educational, with forest wildlife and Virunga history along the trail.
Volcano hiking

- Mount Karisimbi: a demanding two-day climb for serious hikers
Best time to visit
Rwanda’s mild climate makes Volcanoes a year-round destination. Dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer firmer trails for trekking and hiking. Wet seasons bring lush forest and strong birding, with muddier paths.
Volcanoes vs Bwindi for gorilla trekking
Choose Volcanoes National Park for short transfers from Kigali, polished lodge access, and golden monkeys in the same park. Choose Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for more permit availability, lower Uganda permit cost, denser forest trekking, and the habituation experience. Cross-border itineraries often do Volcanoes then Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or southern Bwindi via Cyanika.
Dian Fossey grave hike
The hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb and the Karisoke area is a lower-intensity Virunga day that still carries real conservation history, often paired with golden monkey tracking when guests want a second park morning without a second gorilla permit.
Getting there
