Gishwati-Mukura National Park was gazetted in 2016 after decades of deforestation, protecting two montane forest blocks on Rwanda’s Congo-Nile watershed ridge. It is the country’s fourth national park and a quieter counterpoint to Volcanoes and Nyungwe.
Habituated chimpanzees share the canopy with golden monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys. Birding is strong for Albertine Rift endemics, and the park’s community-rooted conservation story is part of what makes a visit feel distinct from Rwanda’s better-known forests.
What to experience
Guided chimpanzee tracking is the headline activity, with forest walks that also open golden monkey and birding opportunities. Trails are less crowded than Nyungwe’s main circuits, which suits travellers who want primate time with more breathing room.
Best time to visit
Dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer firmer forest trails. Wet months are greener and quieter, with muddier paths.
